Tankless installs

Tankless installs, start to finish

A tankless heater heats water as it flows, so there's no storage tank to run out. It also has a heat exchanger that hard water coats with scale, which is why every install gets valves for flushing.

  • Sizing

We count your fixtures and how much the water has to warm up, then pick a heater that keeps pace.

  • The gas line

We check the line's size and length against the heater's rating. Sometimes it has to be larger.

  • The vent

Tankless units vent differently from tank heaters. We check the path the vent will take before we quote.

  • The water side

Isolation valves, service ports and an inlet filter screen go on every install, so it can be flushed later.

  • Permit and inspection

We pull the permit where the work needs one, and the inspection follows the install.

  • The first flush date

Before we leave, we set your first flush a year out and offer you the Flush plan.

How an install goes

From a photo to a working heater

  1. 01

    Step 1: Text a photo

Send the label of your current heater and a picture of where it sits.

  2. 02

Step 2: A look at the house

We measure the gas line and the vent path and check the water side.

  3. 03

    Step 3: A written estimate

You get the number on paper before any work starts, with what it includes and what it doesn't.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Install day

We swap the heater, set the valves, test it and show you how to read its screen.

  5. 05

    Step 5: Your first flush

We put it on the calendar a year out and text you when it's due.

Before anyone drives out

How pricing works

Install prices move on a few things. Here is what, and when you will know the number.

  • What moves the price

The heater you choose, the length and size of the gas line, the vent path, and whether the water side needs new valves or piping.

  • What the estimate includes

The heater, the install labor, the valves, the permit where one is needed and the haul-away of the old unit. It also lists what it leaves out, like drywall repair or paint.

  • The visit

A look at the house comes before the estimate. Whether that visit has a charge, and whether it is credited toward the job, is on the estimate in writing.

  • When you get the number

In writing, before we start. If we find something new once the wall is open, we stop and quote it before we go on.

Questions about installs

Will a tankless heater fit where my tank is?

Usually, because a tankless unit hangs on the wall and takes less floor than a tank. The vent and the gas line decide it, and we check both at the visit.

Do I need a bigger gas line?

Sometimes. A tankless heater can draw more gas at once than a tank. We measure the line and say so in the estimate.

Do you pull permits?

Yes, where the work needs one. The permit and the inspection are listed on the estimate.

Should I repair or replace my heater?

If the heater is scaled and otherwise sound, a flush is the first step. If a part has failed or the unit is old, we show you both prices and let you choose.

Not sure what you have?

Text a photo of the heater's label. We'll tell you what it is and what a flush or a swap would involve.
